Triond: Has a Bad Reputation Led to Less Page Views?

Gone are the days of thousands of page views in just a matter of hours. Gone are the days of a community feel. Gone are the days of quality writing on Triond. It’s this last point that I would like to illustrate as being the main contributor to significantly less page views than Triond writers were used to a little over a year ago.

Weather Phenomenon: Five Deadliest Tornadoes in US History

There is no storm more devastating than a hurricane born out of the Atlantic but the tornado, or twister as it’s commonly known, can have a major effect on people’s lives to the point of losing someone they love. The tornado is never more prevalent than in the United States of America’s tornado alley which runs between the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains and includes the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska. Tornadoes are also common in Florida where their intensity can be among the highest.

So with that in mind, here are the top 5 deadliest US tornadoes:

Cromwell Suns Fail to Make It Three in a Row

By Rhys Chamberlain

Third time lucky it was not when the Cromwell Suns was beaten 43-38 in the final of the Wanaka basketball competition for 2009.

The champion of the competition for the past two years took on another outside team the Queenstown Defenders in the final last Saturday night at Mt Aspiring College where it headed into the match as the favourite for a third successive title but couldn’t quite pull it off. The Suns made the final after it thrashed Wanaka side Torque Marine in the semi final the previous Wednesday.
The match was a scrappy affair, both sides missing crucial shots around the rim and relying on garbage points to keep it in the match. 6 foot 7 Brazilian Christian Alberton was the Suns main offensive force ably helped by Jonny Roberts who chipped in at crucial times.

The lead changed on numerous occasions, both sides unable to gain an edge in the match and the biggest lead being only 4 until the final whistle. At half time the Suns trailed 29-27 and looked a good chance to win the match. The turning point came late in the match when Alberton blocked an opposition player only to have a foul called, Queenstown making its free throws and Cromwell losing its cool. With one minute left on the clock and the scores tied, Queenstown knocked down a crucial three pointer and subsequently stole the ball back from the Cromwell inbound sealing the victory.
For the Cromwell Suns it was heart breaking to lose in the fashion it did when victory was at its fingertips and throw away a coveted third straight Wanaka basketball title.
The Cromwell Suns basketball club would like to sincerely thank Glen Christiansen from The Golden Gate Lodge for providing the sponsorship required for new uniforms for the season and to Mark Knox from Stirling Sports for organising its gear. It would also like to acknowledge Cromwell College for allowing it gymnasium time for practicing each Monday evening and everyone that has supported the side during the season.

The Cromwell Suns:

Christian Alberton, Martin Avenati, Rhys Chamberlain, Dave Hope, Rob Rietveld, Andy Ritchie, Jonny Roberts, Nathan Roberts, Nick Scott

Rugby: The Greatest All Blacks Team Ever

It would be extremely hard to compare players and positions from the early 1900’s with those of the current millennia and decide who would don the black jersey in the greatest All Blacks rugby team of all time so I have decided to create the greatest All Blacks team of all time since 1990, the era that I can recall watching most matches. It also leaves me with adequate knowledge about most of the players in that era and not rely on what others say about certain players that I was unable to actually view playing the game.

So here it is, the greatest New Zealand All Blacks team since 1990:

15. Jeff Wilson
The dual international (cricket) played most of his 60 test matches on the wing but was equally at home at fullback. The Otago and Highlanders player scored two tries on debut in 1993 versus Scotland at Murrayfield.

The Strain: A Real Vampire Tale (Beware Twilight Lovers)

Guillermo Del Toro

For lovers of the vampire genre Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s first book in The Strain Trilogy titled “The Strain” is a fantastic read and a step back in time to traditional vampire tales as a pose to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight or Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones. There’s no love interaction between humans and vampires here but rather no love at all, the way it should be.

Rugby: Otago Country Embarks on Historic Tour

By Rhys Chamberlain

Otago Country in the Heartland Championship?
At least that’s what former Otago hooker David Latta and the rest of the 2009 Otago Country administration will be analysing as the side kicks off its first tour in 25 years against Wairarapa Bush on Saturday afternoon in Masterton.
Latta and his crew will be keen to see whether his team of country club amateurs can foot it with the next tier of New Zealand players when they take on the Masterton based province along with Horowhenua-Kapiti in Levin on Wednesday and North Otago in Oamaru the following Saturday.
The squad is basing itself in Wellington for two of the three matches on tour and bussing to the venues before heading back down South to take on North Otago.
The tour has cost the administration and the country clubs approximately $35,000 and this is where the strive to play in the Heartland competition gets tough as some of that money had to be raised by each individual in the side through local business sponsors and fundraising events.
It will be an interesting test for the side whose player selection pool comes from each of the club competitions in both South/West Otago and Central Otago.
The side boasts a combined 10 players from last weeks Otago Country finals match up between Lawrence and Arrowtown where the visiting Lawrence was the victors 41-6. The squad also sees Otago squad members Sam Young and James Kenny from Lawrence along with Otago trialist Ben Blakely from Wakatipu and the big draw card, Charles Hore from Maniototo. Hore is recently returned from a stint overseas and rejoined his beloved Maniototo club late in the season.
The only major losses for the team leading into the first match is Upper Clutha centre and former Tasman NPC member Sam Gibbens who came away from the Central Otago semi final showdown against Wakatipu with a smashed eye socket and a broken nose.

The Squad is:
Blair Young, Hamish McDougall, Hamish Wilson, Vaughan Dowling, Willie Harris, Junior Maiono, Simon Grant, Daniel Iosefo, Daniel Dodds, Dave Kenny, Aiden Winter, Shaun Tauti, Ben Blakely, James Kenny, Sam Young, Alan Thomson, Charlie Hore, Reece Winter, Lex Kaleca, Sam Gibbons, Mitchell Lake, Bill Maiono, Sonny Rakaruru, Ben Purvis, Matt Faddes, Tom Kelly.

Rugby: Arrowtown seeks to complete haul

One more win is all it will take to complete Arrowtown's best season in recent memory.
